Dirty work

It's been a big week this week - a week of 10-hour days spent at the yards, a couple of hours before spent preparing for, and after spent dismantling and cleaning up.

It's an organisational Everest (for me anyway!) getting all the eartags sorted, vaccines organised and kept chilled, cow and calf lists printed out ready for notation and mothering-up, food and drink prepared for everyone... well, it's just big.yards_0255
My eyes are scratchy and bleary and I have even managed to get injured.
(Honestly I am hopeless, but more on that silly saga later.)
.
This post is about filth.
Dust and dirt and filth that one must inhale and observe and do one's best to ignore.
(I always feel like sticking my little finger out while drinking an imaginary cup of tea when I refer to myself as 'one', don't you?).
I have to admit I don't have many photos of the actual branding process this time around - I was just too busy taking part! I would have been pretty darned unpopular if I had downed my tools and called on the production line (i.e. Mr Incredible, my dad, my brother, the kids and a couple of other helpers) to halt and pose.
Trust me on this.
Their senses of humour just don't stretch that far.
I do have some quick snaps of the haze and muck to give you a clear mental image of my workplace (if you get my meaning).
.
Before the cattle arrive, the yards can a be a peaceful place...
calm and sturdy and serene...yards_0092
Even pretty if you use your imagination just a little.
Then the low roar of hooves and horses and swishing and mooing arrives...

and the dust and the flies...
(Hello, it's Dash the seasoned stockman bringing in the mob!)

Basically what I am saying is that branding is dirty work.

The yards soon become a dustbowl of busy bovines as the stockmen (and women!) move them through to be sorted. The cows get treated for buffalo fly (the bites can cause quite severe irritation to cattle and horses... and people, if the complaints of the kids following the mob are to be believed. Note earlier photo of Dash and the swarm).

The calves are drafted off from their mothers to be later 'marked', tagged, assessed, castrated (if they are male and not to be kept as bulls) and vaccinated.
.
While all this sorting out is being undertaken, Violet and a friend played Barbie dolls beside the cattle crush (where the cows move through single file) oblivious to the cacophany!

Never mind the muck on the ground - it's the orange chiffon today!

Of course, we do take time to stop and have a cuppa occasionally -

we reflect on the activity of the morning, the state of play in the cricket and tennis

(and the laundry ahead of us!)...yards_0065

Those boots tell a whole story on their own...

not a pretty story, but a story nonetheless!

Of course not EVERYTHING is filthy at the yards...

some things are held aloft above the muck specifically to distract the photographer.

Oh dear... sorry.

Someone wanted toes to nibble on last post, if I recall?

Gotta go get ready for another round tomorrow...

See you when the dust settles again!

How can so much hard work be fun? That's right, after its done it was fun just ask. I guess it is because of the challenge of the whole thing. - Bill

Ha, I went from eww with the mucky boots and jeans to oooh, give me that baby. Me! I want those tender tootsies. Hand over that baby! I have some serious nibbling to do.

Isn't it great that instead of going to an office everyday, you get to do things like this?

It certainly makes for a great-to-read blog!

You make me feel like I'm sleeping through life!!! And thanks for the baby toes - I'll pretend they're Henry's little feet so I can smooch my monitor....

Such beautiful photographs!

I love that the girls were playing barbies *right* amongst all the activity.

Also - wow, I've never seen such a cute baby's foot with 6 toes on it before.

*Just kidding*, they are absolutely *the cuteness!* (made you look though didn't I?)

I'm sure glad you gave us those sweet little toes at the end (and yes, I did go back and count them!). I can almost smell the shot before them from here. Yuck!

Baby's feet are pretty sweet, so thanks for that special treat, oh, dear heavens above, baby's feet. Neat!

Okay. Now I have to go work on my homework. No more excuses...

Ha ha Ness - I am her mother and I wondered why I had never noticed that feature before!!

Pity you didn't get a go on your camera during the action - well, that or one of your less involved relatives had any actual behind camera talents...

You *almost* deserve the washing loads after withholding Paris photos! AND tagging me for a meme!

..Almost.

It was me, it was me!! Ah, the baby toes. (sigh)

Wonderful pictures and great story telling. The tiny kiddos playing with Barbies in the dirt made me smile. Normal as normal can be for them.

Your photos are simply awesome.

I love the photo of Violet :) My daughter and her cousin have also been known to have tea parties right next to the yards (unless we are spraying for ticks).

(and it is a widely known fact that baby feet are officially the cutest things in the whole world).

My boyfriend just got his calves off to market. Not such a mucky job here - all the muck's frozen and packed under snow! Hope you didn't get hurt too badly, and loved your photos.

Checking in here after a HUGE day - and loving the comments. Marvellous how you guys manage to perk me up when I am feeling as flat as a pancake! Man I am tired...

1. I am recovering from hinted-at injury. I am just limping slightly more than normal. Which is a sad sight at the best of times!

2. You lot are making me blush. Which is tricky when your official skin tone is dark olive! Sheesh...

3. Ness - welcome and your ARE a trick! Making my sister check her own baby's toe situation... heh.

4. Cee Cee - you are welcome. I seem to have an inordinate number of feet photos of this child. Hmmmm...

5. Bill - you are so right. It's hard and hot and dirty work, but its sooooo rewarding and interesting.

Sorry, no post tonight peoples...

Happy Australia day for tomorrow to my fellow Aussies!!
:-)
