Bush bouquet... enough to melt yer heart!

Mr Incredible picked somethin' a little special for me this morning.
A 'bush bouquet', if you will.
It was the result of three events colliding in my world:
1. It was freaking cold overnight
(down to minus 5 degrees C according to those game to venture outside)
2. I failed to mow the lawn this week
(a non-shocking circumstance for those in the know)
3. I left the sprinkler going
(don't smack me, the pipe bursts if I turn the hose off without driving all the way - 7 km - to turn the pump off. And it was too cold and dark last night to contemplate!)
End result?
Ice, ice, baby!Winter has arrived at Granite Glen.
...
All hints for keeping warm will be welcomed with open arms!

Bush Babe's Olympic effort

Aren't you glad the Olympics are over?
I sure am.
Not that I don't have my favourite moments (personally, I couldn't go past our blond Aussie pole vaulter pretending he couldn't jump anything much until the last moment, then scraping over to win GOLD, then backing up nonchalantly to notch up an Olympic record to boot! I wonder if he plays poker too?).
...
And it's not that I didn't love the fortnight of flashing of perfect human form - think Michael Phelps abdomen ...Dear Lord, is that thing legal?

...and the Jamaican Bolt's incredible thighs, our sweet gay Aussie high diver's perfect lil' butt... (reminds me of my grandmother, who was a saucy old thing, gazing at the swimmers during the Brisbane Commonwealth Games and declaring: "My, they DO have dear little bottoms!" to her slightly stunned granddaughter) ...and the super slow-mo's of the volleyball girls and the marathon women's fat-free legs as they leapt gazelle-like and ran ludicrous distances in the name of Sport. And Voyeurism. Ah, the Olympic spirit!
...
I had a horrible moment myself, when I briefly contemplated what my thighs might look like in slow-mo. A ripple of Olympic Closing ceremony proportions...
*shudder*.
So I turned the TV off and started on an Olympic event of my own.
...
One that I really should have put in some serious training for.
Because God knows that I am badly out of shape, for all events except the Olympic washer-to-dryer lift and dishwasher-unload. I'm starting a campaign to have those two events added to the 2016 games.
Anyone with me?
...
No, really, the event I decided (in a rush of Olympic-inspired blood) to take on was...
The Clover Spraying.
By hand.
With a 12 litre backpack pump.
Made for a bloke about a foot taller than me.
And to top it off, I decided to add pink dye to the spray, to see where I had been.

Very practical, no?
Hmmm....
Well my friends, today, I look out over my lawn and imagine the inviting lush green of a clover-free summer yard. And I do my level best to ignore my bruised shoulders, from 10 loads of clover and bindii poison. I ignore the abdomen muscles shaken rudely from years of hibernation with my four-and-a-half hour spraying stint. I ignore the sunburn around my neck (it's Winter here, I forgot my sunscreen, OK?). I ignore the aching leg muscles and shaky wrist from holding the spray nozzle in a certain position for hours on end. And I ignore the fact that I was so dog-tired after this unanticipate physical activity that I couldn't even keep my eyelids open to see the start of the Closing Ceremony. I ignore it all.
Yes I do.
Do so!
...
I ignore all these factors, and overcome my badly out-of-shape physique, and look at this:

Yeah.

Whole new meaning to painting the town red, eh?
Painting Granite Glen pink.
So can you see how it might look in a few weeks?
All verde and even and lush?
You've just got to use your imagination!
Luckily mine is in tip-top shape...
Ripped, you might say.

Your Olympic candidate for Imagination .

Question: What was your favourite Olympic moment, and why?

Mystery winner... and some philosophy!

Thanks to everyone for playing my Mystery Photo this week!!
And we have a winner... the answer...drum roll please!

... is WATER CRYSTALS!!!
Well done Julie from Australia!!
While I do admit it looked quite like ice, like where some yobbo emptied the esky after a big barbie (have we lost any Americans yet?) the "things" featured in this image are actually a water-saving tool for Aussie gardeners.
...
Julie is apparently as garden-savvy as me (she told me so!) and she too relies on water crystals, to make up for the lack of constant water on her garden (well, this is all just assumption, this is actually what I do in my poor neglected flower patch).
Water crystals, for the uninitiated, resemble sugar crystals when dry and are dug into normal garden or potting soil to assist in water retention.
Shocking things happen when children and water crystals come into contact however...
Like unnoticed handfuls get left adjacent to actual garden beds. Then it rains. And weird jelly-like "ice" appears in unexpected locations. Like this...
But it gets worse.
If said children grab handfuls of crystals and stuff them in their pockets the result after a bout in the washing machine is not pretty! Jelly ice through clothes and the machine... yeeeeaaaahhhhh!!!
...
And in something not completely unrelated...

How is that children are that little bit more loveable when fast asleep, and the view so much more delightful when the heaven's have opened??

Some more of life's little mysteries...

Autumn hues and Mother's Day

The season is a-changin' around Granite Glen...
We've had our first fogs and frosts...
And the leaves of our Liquid Amber tree is providing
an Autumnal display
of vivid proportions...
From magenta
to yellow
and cracklin' brown...
(I feel a little like the last leaf at the moment!)
...
Actually, I feel very lucky.
TWL climbed into bed at 6.20am with us and told me:
'Mummy, I DO berry, berry wuv you.'
(with hugs)
...
And Dash climbed in soon after and snuggled and nuzzled and gazed at me and said nothing.
He didn't need to.
...
Then my wonderful kids brought me a red-wrapped gift:
'Keith Urban's Greatest Hits!'
Perhaps SSB was reading yesterday's post?
(Although I doubt it!)

...

And I got a Mother's Day card signed by my loved ones
- this is a note-worthy event indeed. (I have threatened to frame the cards from my husband, they are so rare!).
It was funny and heart-bendingly sweet.
It reminded me it has all been worthwhile.
The rollercoaster of parenthood.
We have much ahead of us I know, but I am cherishing my moment right now...
...
I wish all you other mums out there a
Happy Mother's Day!

Cherish and enjoy ...
the season can change so quickly.

No green thumb...

Today's confession:
I am a terrible gardener.
This is not a claim I make lightly.
...
Don't get me wrong...

I love plants:
agapanthus, lavender, roses, gerberas, poinciana trees...
Among my very favourite things in the world.
Sadly, they don't love me.
Or more specifically:
They don't look after themselves as much as they need to if they are going to survive in my garden.
...

I plant them, all enthusiastic and filled with good intentions..

Then I simply get distracted with other stuff...

...kids, husbands, houses, cooking, animals, puppies, photos, bookwork, blogs...
...

And one day I glance up and BAM!
... my garden has descended into crispy chaos.
Lack of water, lack of fertiliser, lack of love.
*sighs dejectedly*
...
I inherited a lovely collection of rose bushes.
They have been my mother's pride and joy for years.

Here is one - photo taken before we moved in!
Currently, the same rose bush stands almost as tall as the house.
Black spot has made its ugly presence felt on the leaves of this majestic bush.
It needs some serious TLC.
I get a tad intimidated by rosebush pruning.
It's thorny and scary!
I need my Mum!

(The fact that I am a good seven inches taller than my Mum means absolutely nothing when it comes to roses: she can wrassle them down with nary a blink of her huge blue eyes. While I am curled up weeping quietly in the corner. I'm a sook. It's just something you should know.)
...
So you see my point, I'm no Green Thumb. No Don Burke. No Jamie Durie.
(Actually, Jamie, if you are reading this, pop on over - I need a makeover! In my garden first, then... ahem!)

...
It seems rather miraculous when something actually survives through all my neglect.
I feel like handing it a medal.

And when a plant actually manages to bloom...
Well I think it deserves to be honoured in the only way I know how.
I therefore present to you:

The Summer Lily *

I think I'm in love...

This plant gets watered by me, oh, twice a year.

It's leaves die right down and I think its gone...

'Another one bites the dust', I think ...

(Queen anthem in the background)

And then it rises from the rubble and I look up from the laptop and ...

BAM!

White and elegant and beautiful.

All by itself!

I think I might need a mass planting pronto!

...

*This may not be it's correct name, but it's what we call it... feel free to educate me!
