Deadlines and (bovine) bonuses...

This last couple of days have been spent away from Granite Glen - if you have been checking my twitters at all, then you might know the lengths to which I went to avoid packing properly til the last minute. It's a specialty of mine, but this time - when our darling son was heading one direction for a 5-day long camp (his very first), our sweet daughter heading another for a 'sweepover' at her cousins', and Mr Incredible and I driving a third direction for various bovine-related business (before Violet and I head for the Big, Big Smoke for a couple of days) ... well, it very nearly sent me into meltdown.
...
As you have no doubt deduced, I did not.
Meltdown completely, that is, although my washing machine may never be the same. (I actually boasted publicly that for a brief couple of hours, NOT ONE THING was dirty in my house... laundry, I mean. And if THAT ain't worth twittering, my dear feathered friends, then NOTHING is!)
...
So where was I?
Oh yes. Heading northwards towards our bovine business events.
Hopefully with the correct suitcases.
...
Among my tasks here (as I tap away on my staggery old laptop in a town 300km from home) is to present a promotional DVD to fellow cattle breeders. The same promo which is (fingers crossed) being shown somewhere in Paraguay this week to promote Australia and Aussie Brangus cattle. To explain, in a couple of years time our cattle association is holding a World Congress (think 'conference' but with heaps of laconic Aussie hospitality, side-trips to cattle properties/ranches, a couple of tourist attractions, and plenty of beef-related gourmet feasts). And we want people to come. From other countries. Or else the 'world' part of the title will look a little superfluous!!
...
The promotional DVD for this project has kept me fairly busy in the past few weeks. The aim is to provide the information and intrigue needed to entice Brangus breeders from around the world to check out how us Aussies do it!
(Breed Brangus cattle, I mean... what did you think? Sheesh!)
...
I had visions for this clip - grand, grand visions. Sweeping footage of our landscape from snow-capped mountains to vast red deserts, clear blue skies and plains of green grass (oh, and sleek black and red cattle, natually!). These magnificent image would be set to some fabulous background instrumental from our own Keith Urban or Lee Keraghan?
Can you see it?
Feel it?
doonside_0815 E
*sigh*
...
It all started off well. We atttended a well-known sale and got some great footage with a real Aussie flavour...
brangus dvd_0796 E
Our cameraman hard at work as the bulls are sold in the timber sale ring.
Please note the green grass - courtesy of a sprinkler! The only green grass outside a houseyard lawn for hundreds of miles!

brangus dvd_0804E
Ooohhh... he's nice!
(But more on him later...)
brangus dvd_0818 E
And even billies on the boil - how 'Aussie bush' is that?
...
Of course, as an Aussie Prime Minister once said:
Life wasn't meant to be easy...
and that sure rang true for this project.
...
Not only were my timelines extremely short,
and our budget not QUITE up for sending a cameraman around the entire country,
but a guy we had lined up to help out was in a bad car accident
(he is recovering thank goodness,
but gave everyone a terrible fright, not least himself)
and there was THIS little weather event...
duststorm_0881
... when the lights went out for a few days
thanks to the enormous duststorm that swallowed up the East Coast of Australia.
It put paid to about half of the location shoots we had organised.
The timing was bizarrely immaculate.
duststorm_0845
Like Mother Nature was messing with me.
duststorm_0848
(In case you are wondering, I did get a grip and realise that perhaps a duststorm hitting half a continent was probably not aimed PERSONALLY at me.
roadwindmill_0991
Cause Mother Nature knows I generally love her work.
But this dust storm business?
Just not funny when you want your cattle gleaming in the sunshine
and your skies royal blue!
...
Nonetheless, our intrepid cameraman Brad soldiered through and after a few hundred kilometres and many, many emails, we finally (within an hour or so of deadline) got the thing done. The end result is not EXACTLY what I had planned, but it has sleek black and red cattle, some mustering Aussie-style, bottle trees, kangaroos, and a cute blond kid with no front teeth entreating the viewer to:
"Come to Othtralia, to thee my Branguth". tooth_0141
(Wonder who that could possibly be?)
...
And tomorrow - as the promo goes to air in Paraguay - I present the finished product to our event committee...
And I feel just like I did as that final load of washing
went into the dryer late at night Sunday. brangus_0824
Kinda relieved but afraid to relax and celebrate too much...
brangus_0825
Sure, it's DONE.
But is it ENOUGH?
Or will it all need to be DONE AGAIN in the very near future!
...
Perhaps I could spin a variation on Forrest Gump's famous line...
Life is like a basket of laundry...
You never know if the job is EVER done.
...
Oh... and THIS guy...
brangus dvd_0808E
he's waiting at Granite Glen for us when we finish this week of Mad Travelling.
Cause we found time in amongst all that video stuff to put our finger up at that auction.
And we nabbed this gorgeous beast...
He well might give Elvis a run for his money!

Wee Little Worlds

I am supposed to be getting organised for a humungous week of action.
I am supposed to be folding and labelling and cleaning.
And packing for a whole week away from Granite Glen.
...
Instead I am here sharing some madness with you.
It's all Katy's fault.
Katy Potaty sent a suggestion to me via Twitter (yes, I am all kinds of twit) last week which managed to steal an hour of my time late one night...
It was this link with the following message:
This is a great photoshop tutorial. Great for your ranch photos!
...
(Amendment: Katy is NOT American, but seems to have been heavily influenced in her language by all things Yank...my mission is to have her saying 'property' instead of 'ranch' by the end of this week!)
...
Intrigued, I clicked and looked and discovered a WHOLE NEW WORLD.
In fact, it shows you how to make your own new worlds!!!
Think I've gone nuts (nuts-er?)?
The tutorial showed me yet ANOTHER corner of Photoshop
I had not explored, and described pretty simply how to turn this:
drive08_0683 e
into this:
drive08_0683 globe1e
How funky is that?? A wee little globe!
With a wee little church and a wee little tree...
(I've gone all Scottish, I'm not sure why!)
...
So of course I had to try something else...
drive_0188 pan e
This panoramic crop was more the proportions recommended in the tutorial...
drive_0188 pan globe1e
Tee hee hee...
This one makes me smile!
It's a bit Ettamogah Pub-ish... what do you think?
...
This trick is a little bit addictive...
And I suddenly feel like Horton,
(anyone else Dr Suess nuts?)
where an elephant discovers a whole world on a speck of dust.
(I am the elephant in this scenario, in case you are wondering!)
...
Shall we try one more?dust_0075

This one is looking a little more Down the Rabbit Hole meets the Outback.sunset dust_0075 globe e

A little surreal?

Actually it looks a little like an eyeball, no?

It's time to stop messing with the world methinks...

and start packing!

Any Rain Will Do...

I had an awesome comment in my Weather post this week that I could not leave unacknowledged.
...
The fabulous Rhubarb Whine was inspired (or harrassed) into action by my constant harping about rain (or lack of it) and set her busy mind to our drought dilemma.
She proceeded to re-write the lyrics for "Any Dream Will Do" -
sung (when one googles the lyrics) by one JASON DONOVAN.
(Uh huh? Oh, that's right. Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat. Right.)
...
And seeing as how I actually managed to capture some of the drops of H2O that fell immediately after I published that Weather Watch post (it was amazing, sprinkling down for a good 15 minutes, putting 9.5mm in our dusty rain gauge) along with Violet's frolicking in the shower, I decided to put pics to lyrics for y'all!
...
Presenting VIOLET and RHUBARB's ANY RAIN WILL DO
rain_1016
I closed my eyes,
drew back the curtain to see for certain what I thought I knew
Far far away, Bush Babe is weeping,
but the clouds are sleeping
Any rain will do
rain_1032
I have a coat,
with plastic lining bright colours shining,
wonderful and new
And in the east, the dawn is breaking,
and the world is waking
Any rain will do
rain_1018
A crash of thunder,
a flash of light
could this be it, some rain tonight?
But the clouds are fading into darkness
I am left alone (ahhhh!)
rain_1020
May I return to the beginning
The light is dimming, and the clouds are too
The world and I,
we are still waiting, still hesitating
Any rain will do .
rain_1022 crop
How cool was that?
Could NOT have said it better myself!
...
Note: the rain did not reach more than 3 kilometres in any direction. It pretty much fell RIGHT on our house and my uncles house nearby. Kinda weird. Nice, but weird.

Friends, forgetfulness (and whips)...

Once upon a time
A girl called Bush Babe went to work in a newspaper office
near the beach in Sunny Queensland.
It was a very male-dominated workplace,
and while the boys were mostly nice blokes
it was a young blonde girl who made BB feel right at home.
She was super-organised and seriously talented
and as sweet as anyone BB had ever met in her life.
...
Through the years, this girl would come to be one of BB's very
bestest friends in the whole wide world.
They would share stories and ideas
and lean on each other through the emotional rollercoaster
that is being a woman.
...
This girl would also be a photographer at the
wedding of BB and Mr Incredible,
sharing her incredible gift in the best way possible
by capturing the joy of that special day.
...
And she would get married herself
(where BB would return the favour)
and go on to bear gorgeous twins
with whom BB's own offpsring would cavort
at our unnofficial photographers' playgroup.
...
And despite the fact that BB would abandon her neck of the woods
and abscond to the Bush with her family,
this girl would remain firmly in touch,
despite her friend's inability to return phone calls.
Or remember birthdays.
duststorm_0868 w
Dear Lou Lou ('whipgirl', at left) ...
Kaz ('feathergirl' at right) reminded me last night.
I absolutely CANNOT believe I forgot your birthday.
AGAIN.
I am a moron.
What does one get for a friend who puts up with this kind of terrible behaviour?
I guess I can share our memories of your latest visit with your darling duo...
Friends and their kiddos...
visitor_0915 e
And no I am not sure what my son is doing here?
Am suspecting the little flirtation we picked up on might be a two-way thing?
Gads! I thought we had another 10 years before we dealt with hormones?
...
Or perhaps I could share your prowess with a whip with the world?
Whip Wench
visit_0876 ae
Yeeee-haaa!!!
(Look out Oby, your wife is quite dangerous with leather strips!)
You know how you are all Surfer Girl even deep in the Aussie bush
and yet will have a RED hot go at anything?
Even cracking a whip
In the middle of a dust storm?
Well that's among the things I adore about you.
visitor_0873
Or perhaps I can tell all the fabulous people
who take precious time from their day to visit this little black blog,
to wander over to YOUR PLACE
or even to your very own blog?
And they too can be wowed with your skill.
(If they haven't already been wowed by your smile. And whip-crackin' style.)
Would that start to make up for my oversight?
I love you, girlfriend!
...
Oh. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
(and thanks Kaz for slapping me around the head and reminding me!)

Weather Wednesday... after the (dust) storm

It's TRUE.
I actually remembered my own weekly report this week...
wonders will NEVER cease!
...
I so wanted to bring some greenery to this section of the blog... but Mother Nature is just not playing ball yet. The only green around is the watered lawn (the bits that I actually remember to put the sprinkler onto!) and everything else seems dusted with, well, dust. That's what a dust storm will do to you...
This shot was taken DURING the storm
of the SUN.
duststorm_0881
Call me crazy, but it looks for all the world like the moon to me....
...
The skies have cleared somewhat since this was taken, and I am optimistically hanging out clothes, washing the Prado, trying hard to ignore the forecasts (watched kettles and all that) in a superstitious effort to draw some rain onto our corner of the world.
Of course today I had to break the last of those 'rules'.
My sneak peak has revealed the following:

weather oct7
...
How can heavy showers (Sunday) bring less than 1 mm of rain?
I ask you!
...
In summary, if it EVER rains here again,
I shall be behaving EXACTLY like this guy...
frolicking in the green-ness!
brangus_0824
(More about him next post!)
...
What's your weather report look like this week?

4 October 2009

New month, new header, no new weather!

Thought I'd sneak a little peak into the making of a blog header for y'all... no idea if anyone is remotely interested in how I come up with my bizarre 'doorway' into the Bush Babe blog, but thought I'd share a snapshot or two anyway!
...
I was driving home from Rock-Vegas yesterday afternoon (a long day filled with driving, grocery shopping and editing video footage... rivetting stuff!) when I saw a photo opportunity. Actually, it's rare that I DON'T see photo opportunities (it's kind of a curse really, just ask my hubby - hell of ETAs!) and I often keep on driving, aware of my schedule. But I made myself act on it this time. The ever-changing landscape and weird dust-tinted atmosphere converged into a really interesting shot.
Well, series of shots.
roadwindmill_0980
These were all taken within about one kilometre of highway,
same windmill,
different angles.
roadwindmill_0991
Groovy, no?
roadwindmill_0992
And when I looked at my blog today,
and then the date,
I decided:
Alrighty then!
Time for a change!
Time to dabble in Photoshop...
So I chose the last of these images (nice and clean to allow for the wording) and pulled up last months banner:
sept09 BBkidsbanner
And dragged my old font work across from previous banners
(saved in PSD format which preserves each layer of image and text, allowing me to 'harvest' the basic 'look' of my header from month to month... did your eyes just go all stary?)
aug09 emuBBbanner1
So I took the 'Bush Babe' and the 'of Granite Glen' across to my windmill image and began work on a new look.
...
If you have been 'round here much at all, you will know that I can't have a 'straight' image in the header... that wouldn't really be me, would it?
A little something left of centre, maybe...
Something like this?
lilbulls_1494
Well, it's left of centre for HIM!!
And yes, that WAS me cracking myself right up there!
I also adore a particular script font I decided on for the taglines -
it's called Jane Austen and it's my current crush.
(Am I the only person who crushes on fonts? Yes, fine, OK. I'm a freak!).
It's lovely and scrawly and elegant.
Therefore it has one of those three things in common with me...
(and if you've seen my chook scratch running writing you will know what I mean!)
So ...
here 'tis.

october09 duststorm a

Dust. Windmills. Bull snot.

It screams ME (this week)...

Welcome to my world!

Sounds of Driving...

It's late... my brain is a little fried from trying to help edit a promotional video for our cattle. More on that down the track. First, I thought I might share a little of what I have been singing along to in the Prado throughout my 600+ kilometre round trip today...
...
Thankfully, I had the car to myself. Nobody's sensibilities were adversely affected by my terrible karaoke voice - although cannot vouch for those in other cars subjected to the vision of a woman in a white tank top flying past them lip-synching wildly to the following artists:
...
Firstly a little U2.. .
"Blue eyed boy meets brown eyed girl... ooohhhh oh.." *
.
Then a bout of Guy Sebastian
"I’m gonna wait 'til the stars come out... See them twinkle in your eyes..."
That boy can hit a falsetto that makes my eyes water!
.
Then, of course, some Dooby Brother's
China Grove...

Truly one of the all-time great driving songs!
...
Tell me...
What music do you drive to?
What rocks your socks, makes you jive as you drive?
And (most importantly) are you as bad a singer as me?

Waiting your reply with bated breath...

BB

*Would totally love to show these clips here but the rotten scoundrels have disabled embedding - some music companies are just no fun at all!
