Granite, grass and What Got Shot

Among the seventy gazillion jobs I have taken on out here in the bush, is a voluntary marketing role for a big (bovine) event in a couple of years time. This long-term project will require images... lots and lots of images. So guess what I did recently, with two kids in tow, and while Mr Incredible was off working elsewhere?
...
Yep. Have Nikon, will shoot.
Here's some of What Got Shot...
Red brangus cows grazing peacefully on a granite flat near our (non-running) river.
(You can almost see it in the background above).
Not a bad start...
Then I decided to 'go bush' with the Prado and get some more close-up paddock pics of some cows and calves... Dash and Violet thought carefully for about 2 seconds about whether they would like to come with me for a little walk in the grass.
They said "No thanks"...

And put their feet up...

Here is one of the reasons why...

This is spear grass - a native grass to Queensland.

And it has zillions of little wiry 'spears' tangled at the top of each tuft of grass... effective for spreading it's seeds...

Right into the fur - or skin- of whatever passes by...

Nice.
Not.

I took about half an hour shooting cows and calves belly-deep in spear grass ... only had to break up two sibling punch-ups during that time! Then drove some more. Then took some more pics of cows and calves belly-deep in sepia grass...

And eventually, of course, the kiddos needed to stretch their legs.

After a couple of hours of being cooped up in the Prado, they needed (apparently) to feel the granite beneath their feet...

My son has the longest toes on the planet.

Seriously, they are like fingers...

And they hang on too - he scaled this boulder like a lizard.
(That analogy sounded better in my head!)

Then it was time to ... well... run away, run away!

I'm not sure why.

An attack of the 'mad sillys' as my Mum would say.

Which of course ended in tears.

She often says that too!

These guys on the horizon helped distract the runaways on the drive home...

So you see?

I start off with a clear goal in mind, and what do I end up with?

Grass and granite.

Rocks and roos.

You see how easily distracted I get...

now...

was someone after cow photos??

BB,
I always enjoy your great photos - your countryside is beautiful and your children are delightful :)

Well, you DID have some red cows! I love the shots you take of the kids, though, and always enjoy that peek into your life. They were all amazing - and I especially liked the very first one.

Spear grass. Hmmm. I learn SO much from reading your blog!!

Like the cows, too. We mostly have black angus/brangus.

Your Prado wasn't red! Yeah! Living around so many dirt roads (we're paved cause someone w/ tons of moola paved the road leading up to a big giant Celtic cross) I understand that getting a vehicle clean & having it stay that way are, well, two different stories.

Now on to the good stuff. Your photography is so beautiful. So what if you didn't get all of the cattle shots. Just means you get to take off again & go *wink* work again!

The mad sillies are in effect here today. I like that wording. I'm stealing it and using it in my classroom if you don't mind too much.

Your spear grass looks wicked. We have something similar we call "cheat grass" probably because it looks all green and lush for about a week and then goes dry and has those poky seeds that stick in everything. If the cattle eat much of it they can get sick from the nasty seeds in their gut.

As for bovine photos. Eh, do them anytime. Cattle are easy models as long as they don't get all curious and come and STAND AND STARE. I loved the toes much better.

Great photos! Love the big granite formation under the tree. That spear grass looks something awful! At my parents' beach house we used to have some grass that was just awful (can't remember the techincal name) but we called it "pokies." If you walked through it certain times of the year, these 3-pronged spikey things would just get into your socks, feet, and especially the dog's paw pads. They'd always start limping and you'd have to stop and lift their leg's like a horse's, and pick the pokeys out!

Lovely photos, even if you were distracted. Surely Beef Week should give (have given) you some photo fodder?

Ha! Yeah i only see one cow shot in there but that's okay cuz then we get to see all the other fun stuff you shoot.

Okay your munchkins have feet of steel! Just saying.

Also i know it's a weird Yank thing but i love the Kangaroos! They are so stinking cute.
